In My Bag

It’s been nearly a year since my last “in my bag” post, and a lot has changed! I thought it was about time for an update. I still like to keep things pretty streamlined, so you won’t find me carting around extra clutter. I am naturally a pretty cluttered person, so my brain needs hyper-organization to function well and get things done. Of course, my bag does collect the odd receipt or piece of scrap paper, and I sometimes find several black pens or tubes of lip balm floating around. I’m still human.

The bag: This week I’m carrying the canvas, rope and leather “Work Hard & Be Nice to People” tote I made last summer.

Clockwise from top left:

  1. Pocket Moleskine notebook for lists, ideas, and doodles
  2. Just Kids by Patti Smith – After several people recommended this to me, I bought it for the plane ride to NYC last October. I’ve since been distracted by other books, but now I’m back to this one!
  3. Lil pouch for odds and ends (see below). I actually keep meaning to find a new pouch, as this one has seen better days.
  4. Philosophy Hands of Hope
  5. Poppy red Rebecca Minkoff wallet and pink Lodis business card case
  6. White iPhone 4, no case (I have a couple cases, but I almost never use them; it just looks so nice without one.)
  7. Ray Ban rounded Wayfarers with prescription lenses
  8. Nivea milk & honey lip balm
  9. Black pens (I am incredibly picky about the pens I use–these are my two favs)
  10. Keys, still with pink princess house key, still on that souvenir keychain from Italy

Inside the pouch – I almost never carry makeup with me, so these are my only essentials (though I could use some pressed powder to go):

  1. brown bobby pins
  2. Marc Jacobs Daisy rollerball in case I forget to apply before leaving the house, or for touchups after a long day
  3. emergency lipstick (NARS Dolce Vita is a natural standby, unless I’m wearing something brighter)
  4. Advil – I rarely get headaches, but it’s nice to be someone’s else’s savior!

Post-Christmas Treats

Every January, it seems I end up riding the holiday high by purchasing few post-Christmas gifts for myself. This year, though, I went a little further than usual and bought a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens for my DSLR. I’ve been eyeing it for almost a year now, and I finally gave in!

New York October

Film shots from my trip to New York in October. I had a little anxiety about going alone (mostly I was just worried I’d get lost from the airport to Caroline’s apartment), but I made it there in one super sleepy piece.

I’ve been lazy about taking + posting pictures lately, but I’m trying to change that.

Eastward Bound

I’m headed back to New York until Tuesday!  Man, I am so excited to see real fall colors and have a reason to wear sweaters.

(See last trip’s photos here, and look forward to a new batch after I get back.)

white on white

A few shots of my studio, where I spend most of my time these days.  It’s already changed so much since these photos were taken (that red chair had to go—way too uncomfortable).

And, as usual, October is turning out to be my favorite month.  This weekend I’m headed up to Seattle for my birthday, next week is my first group show at Claremont (more info here), and in a couple of weeks, New York!

shades of gray

Here are a few shots left over after taking some reference photos for a future painting.  I keep telling myself that one day I’ll paint something other than me, or my arms, or my neck, or my hair…but so far it just hasn’t happened yet!

How to Boil the Perfect Egg

Until I bought Julia Child’s The Way to Cook earlier this year, I had no idea there was a “best” way to hard boil an egg.  I promise, though, that her way makes perfect eggs every single time.  No guesswork (unlike my previous method, “boil until it feels right”) and none of that weird green business around the yolk.  It’s like magic!  Here’s my slightly simplified version:

  1. Put eggs in pot and cover with cold water.  Bring to boil over like, you know, regular heat or whatever.
  2. As soon as water starts to boil, shut off the heat.  Cover pan with lid and let sit for 17 minutes.
  3. Stick eggs in ice water for 2 minutes, or just run ‘em under cold water for a bit if you only have a few eggs.

According to her way, you would also prick the air bubble in the big end of the egg before you start step 1, and then after step 3 you would boil for another 10 seconds.  But I forget to prick the eggs half the time, and by the time I’ve waited 20-something minutes for my eggs to boil, sit, and chill, I just want to eat them.  Don’t worry, they still come out perfect.

Summer Sewing

I’ve been trying to be productive this summer, but it’s been difficult, because I consider doing just about anything productive.  I mean, I have zero obligations right now.  Putting on pants in the morning is a triumph for me.  Even my to-do lists are short, usually consisting of “water garden” and “bake cookies maybe if I feel like it.”

Last week I got the strongest urge bring out the sewing machine, so between episodes of Curb Appeal and Freaky Eaters, I actually made some things—mostly bags, because I wanted to buy bags but didn’t want to spend money on bags.  But also a couple throw pillows because I didn’t want to spend money on those, either.

Above: a chair I’ve had for years that I (finally) reupholstered, plus wooden-handled bag made out of extra fabric.

Below: wooden-handled bag again; faux-ostrich zippered clutch (using this super simple tutorial, though I added a cotton lining); and the canvas, leather, and rope backpack I mentioned in my last post.
